Many of our board members have been long-time residents in the region and champions for a multitude of children's charities. As such, they offer leadership and insightful guidance as to how the Sens Foundation can maximize its fundraising and philanthropic activities to ensure positive and lasting differences are being made in the lives of children and youth.

Gary Cameron
Gary Cameron, Board Member
Vice President - Enterprise Accounts Bell Canada

Gary Cameron is Vice President - Enterprise Accounts, within the Enterprise division of Bell Canada. Bell Enterprise provides integrated communications solutions to Government, Institutions and large Businesses.

Gary is responsible for managing all aspects of Bell's relationship with more than 300 major Customers, representing top-line revenues of $1.0 Billion per year (2002). Key accounts include the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario (Bell's two largest business accounts), as well as the largest Municipalities, Universities, School Boards and Hospitals in the Province of Ontario. This team leverages the wide range of assets within the Bell/BCE family of companies and works closely with major Industry technology partners to deliver complex, integrated national and international Communications solutions.

Gary has been with Bell Canada for 18 years, working in increasingly senior positions in Provisioning, Technology, Marketing and Sales. In January 1999 Gary was appointed VP - Federal Government, and in May 2003, assumed additional accountability for the Ontario Public Sector and for other major Private Sector accounts.

Gary possesses strong leadership, change management and communications skills, with a high action orientation and passion for the Technology business. Gary has a proven track record for building dynamic, high performance teams which have consistently delivered successful results, while creating Customer, Employee and Share-holder value.

Gary holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Industrial Engineering) from the University of Toronto and is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario (APEO) and the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS).

Gary resides in Ottawa with his wife Cindy and their daughter Sarah and son Adam.



Leanne Cusack

CJOH News at Noon

As co-host of CJOH’s Noon News program, Leanne Cusack experiences it all! She’s been sharing the lunch-hour with viewers of the Capital’s top rated Noon News show for five years offering up a combination of news, entertainment and lifestyles information.

Variety has always been the spice of life on the CJOH noon menu. Leanne is everywhere! She’s taken viewers behind the scenes to see what goes into producing some of the grandest productions to hit the Capital. She’s made her first attempt at skydiving, water skiing and rock climbing under the close scrutiny of a live camera.

One on one interviews with people from virtually all walks of life reveal her interest in what makes people “tick”, her curiosity, her compassion.

When Leanne’s not on the air, she’s likely in the garden or in the barn. She lives on a farm west of Ottawa with husband Wayne, and their horses and dog.

Leanne was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She moved to Ottawa to study journalism at Carleton University.

If you’ve been working while the Noon show was on the air, you may recognize Leanne from her work on both the Children’s Hospital and Heart Institute Telethons.

Leanne is a past recipient of the Radio and Television News Directors Association Scholarship.



Max Keeping

Max Keeping is Vice-President of News at CJOH TV, CTV's affiliate in the Capital, the fourth largest TV market in Canada.

CJOH dominates the news ratings, and has, for more than 25 years. Community involvement is the keystone of the news operation. Max anchors the flagship 6pm news program Monday through Friday.

He's from Grand Bank, Newfoundland and has now been in the news business for more than 40 years.

Max has been honored for his devotion to community...among the honors, the Ontario Medal of Good Citizenship, the Order of Canada, and the Key to the City of Ottawa.



John Kelly
John Kelly, Board Member
Chairman of NexInnovations Inc. & Principal at Reid Eddison Inc.

Throughout his career, Kelly has been an innovator and has held a number of senior executive positions in the Canadian technology sector. From 1995 to 1999, Kelly was the President and Chief Executive Officer of JetForm Corporation. JetForm is a global leader in providing E-Process software solutions subsequently acquired by Adobe. Kelly founded and was Chief Executive Officer of Why Interactive, Canada's first interactive multimedia development company. He was a founder and Chief Executive at both Computer Innovation Distributors Inc. (which later became EDS Innovations, and now NexInnovations) and Nabu Network Corporation, a pioneering cable-based software and information distributor. Kelly was also a founder of SHL Systemhouse Ltd. (since acquired by EDS), where he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer from its inception in 1974 until 1980.

In 1997, Kelly won two significant awards: he was recognized as High Technology Citizen of the Year for the City of Ottawa and also as Master Entrepreneur of the Year for the province of Ontario. In 1998, he also won the Ottawa Business Journal's poll for Most Respected CEO for the City of Ottawa. In 1999, he won the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (OCRI) Civic Entrepreneur of the Year Award. In November 2000, Kelly received the Outstanding Volunteer Fund Raiser Award from the Ottawa Chapter of the NSFRE (National Society of Fund Raising Executives). That same year, Kelly received the Mentor of the Year Award from the Province of Newfoundland. In May 2001, Kelly was chosen Ottawa’s Business Man of the Year for 2001 by the Consumers’ Choice Award and Market Facts Canada.

Kelly holds an honors law degree from the University of Ottawa and an honors B.B.A. degree (Finance) from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. He also holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa. Kelly was Chair of the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance (CATA) from 1998-2000. He is past Chair of Innovators Alliance, an advisory council to the Government of Ontario with members representing Ontario’s fastest growing companies.

He also serves on the Boards of a number of private, public and not for profit organizations including AutoSkill International Inc. (Ottawa), Axis Capital Corporation (Ottawa), AssetMetrix Inc. (Chair, Ottawa), BalloonView Corporation (Chairman, Ottawa), Baker Group International Inc. (Ottawa), Advisory Board of ActivePotato (Ottawa). He was Co-Chair of La Cité collégiale’s 2001-2002 Fund-Raising Campaign and was Honorary Chair of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life 2001. Kelly was Chair of the Infrastructure Working Group of Industry Canada’s National Broadband Task Force in 2001. He also serves on the Boards of Paradata Systems Inc. (Vancouver), Burntsand Inc. (TSE listed, Toronto), INNOVA Multimedia Ltd. (St. John’s), Global Wireless Vision Congress in Sept. 2001 (Chair, St. John’s), Advisory Board of Memorial University’s Chair in Youth-Focused Technological Entrepreneurship (St. John’s), Advisory Board of the Literacy Foundation (St. John’s), Oasis Technology Ltd. Cyril Leeder

Cyril Leeder was promoted to chief operating officer of Scotiabank Place in May of 1998. As COO, he is responsible for the day-to-day management of Scotiabank Place, including the booking and staging of events. Cyril is also president of Palladium Development Corporation, the company that owns, develops and manages the real estate projects that are located near Scotiabank Place. Prior to his appointment as COO, Leeder served as president of Palladium Corporation beginning in 1992, the entity which developed, and now owns, Scotiabank Place. Working with Scotiabank Place and Ottawa Senators majority owner Rod Bryden, it was Leeder’s responsibility to oversee the approvals, design, development, financing, construction and opening of Scotiabank Place.

Born and raised in Brockville, Ontario, Leeder graduated from McMaster University with a bachelor of commerce degree, summa cum laude, in 1982. He then articled with the accounting firm of Clarkson Gordon (now Ernst & Young) in Ottawa, where he obtained his chartered accountant’s designation in 1984. He left the firm in 1984 to work for Ottawa entrepreneur Bruce Firestone and his holding company, Terrace Corporation. Leeder held a number of positions and responsibilities within the Terrace Corporation, until he was named president of the company in 1987 and served as chief executive officer from 1988 to 1992.

Leeder is also a member of the board of directors of the Ottawa Senators Foundation and the Ottawa International Hockey Festival (OIHF). He will serve as chairman for this year’s OIHF, running from January 3 to 6, 2002. Leeder is very active in minor hockey as a parent, coach and administrator.

Cyril resides in Kanata, Ontario, with his wife, Lydia, and children Ciera, 14, Dillon, 12 and Tyler, 10.

Eugene Melnyk
Eugene Melnyk, Board Member
Owner, Governor and Chairman, Ottawa Senators Hockey Club

Eugene Melnyk assumed the role of sole owner, governor and chairman of the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club in August 2003.

Melnyk is chairman and chief executive officer of Biovail Corporation, a company he founded in 1989. Biovail is an international, full-service pharmaceutical company that focuses on researching and developing some of the most advanced drug delivery technologies in the world. Biovail has commercialized more than 20 products in North America and a number of products throughout 55 other countries, both directly and through strategic marketing partnerships. Biovail maintains an active drug development pipeline and its proprietary technology platforms are currently being applied to more than 30 promising drug therapies.

As chairman and CEO, Melnky has led Biovail through exceptional revenue growth from $19 million US in 1995 to $824 million US in 2003. Biovail employs 2,100 people world-wide and is publicly traded on both the New York and Toronto stock exchanges.

Prior to forming Biovail, Melnyk created a medical publishing company called Trimel Corporation that he founded in 1982 and later sold to Thomson Corporation in 1989.

Apart from his strong desire to succeed in business, Melnyk is also a passionate sports fan. As sole owner of the Ontario Hockey League's Toronto St. Michael's Majors major junior hockey team, he has brought long-term financial stability to the organization to make it one of the top teams in the OHL.

In 2001, Melnyk purchased the prestigious Mockingbird Farm in Ocala, Florida. After renaming it Winding Oaks Farm, he committed to reconverting the farm back to its original glory and preserving it as an exclusive training centre for thoroughbred horses. It remains one of the top thoroughbred racing stables in North America. The stable is home to more than 500 thoroughbred horses and has included such notable legends as Archers Bay (winner of the 1998 Queen's Plate) and other Graded Stakes winners such as Graeme Hall, Tweedside, Harmony Lodge, Strong Hope and Speightstown.



Roy Mlakar
Roy Mlakar, Board Member
President and Chief Executive Officer, Ottawa Senators and Scotiabank Place

Roy Mlakar begins his sixth season as president and chief executive officer of the Ottawa Senators and Scotiabank Place. He was elevated to his dual positions in May of 1998. Since he was first appointed president and chief executive officer of the Ottawa Senators on June 3, 1996, Mlakar has worked diligently towards improving the fortunes of the club and increasing its exposure throughout the region and around the NHL.

Mlakar brings 30 years of professional sports experience to his current position. He spent seven seasons with the Los Angeles Kings, including five seasons as an executive vice-president and two seasons as club president. During his tenure with Los Angeles, the Kings set a California professional sports record with 282 consecutive sell-outs and reached the Stanley Cup Final in 1993.

Following his stint with the Kings, Mlakar served as chief operating officer for the Pittsburgh Penguins for two seasons before joining the Senators. During the course of his professional career, he has worked with teams in the American Hockey League, the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball.

Mlakar received his degree in communications/journalism from Akron University in 1972, while working for all three of Cleveland’s professional sports franchises -- the Cleveland Barons (AHL), the Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA) and the Cleveland Indians (MLB).

He joined the Providence Reds of the AHL in 1973, where he served as director of public relations and later as assistant general manager to former NHL coach John Muckler. After five seasons with the Reds, he joined the New Haven Nighthawks, the Los Angeles Kings AHL affiliate. During his 11 years with the Nighthawks, the club won the regular-season crown in 1980 and appeared twice in the Calder Cup final. In 1978, Mlakar won the Hockey News AHL Publicist of the Year. Five years later, he was awarded the AHL Board of Governors’ Hendy Award as the league’s executive of the year.

Mlakar has two daughters who reside in California. Tracy, 26, is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University who works at Kaboom PR in Los Angeles. Jill, 23, graduated from Loyola Marymount in 2001.



Jim Orban

Jim started his newspaper career at the Ottawa Journal in 1972, and joined the Ottawa Citizen in 1975. Since 1976 he has held various sales management positions. He worked at the Edmonton Journal (1991-94) as Director of Advertising sales. Jim returned to the Citizen in 1994 as Vice President Sales and Marketing. In 2003, he was appointed to his current position as General Manager, and is responsible for all the day-to-day business and editorial operations at the Citizen.

Throughout his newspaper career Jim has been involved in many community and newspaper organizations. He has had the privilege of being Chair/President of the Kinsmen Club of Ottawa (President 1975), Canadian Newspaper Advertising Executives Association (President 1987), Greater Ottawa Chamber of Commerce (Chair 1999), Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre Foundation (Chair 1998-2000), and Royal Ottawa Health Care Group (2000-2003).

His current community activity includes Sisters of Charity Health Services Foundation (Chair 2001-04), the Ottawa Partnership (TOP), the Ottawa Hospital (marketing and communications), University of Ottawa (external communications committee) and School of Management advisory board, the Ottawa Senators Foundation, 2004 Grey Cup advisory committee and the Boys and Girls Club advisory board.

Throughout the year, Jim will attend more than 200 community meetings and events covering the full spectrum of organizations, companies and institutions that influence the overall prosperity of Ottawa-Gatineau.

In 2003, Jim received the Civic Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the Ottawa Center for Research and Innovation (OCRI). The award recognizes excellence in aiding community collaboration.

Jim holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Ottawa. In 2002, The University of Ottawa School of Management established the $50,000 James E. Orban scholarship, which awards annual bursaries to students demonstrating leadership and academic excellence.
